Story Law - Why We Do What We Do - Part VII
We all know what happens in a story. This video explains the why.
Story Law - We Rescued the Wrong Princess - Part VI
"What do women want?" Turns out this question was asked and answered in a King Arthur tale. They want what men want... sovereignty. But is this still true? All heroes take on the rebel archetype. Every single scientific and religious breakthrough happened because someone went against the status quo. This is why the villain/witch is demonized in story. Is the wicked witch really worse than the princess? Have we been taught to rescue the wrong character? Remember, in story, women represent wisdom. And a woman that knows what she wants and isn't afraid to pursue it can be intimidating. The beast that guards the princess can be scary... but only to the uninitiated. There's only one story. There's only one person in that story. And that person is you.
Story Law - The Ordinary World - Part V
This is where most stories start. And those that don't quickly find their way there. This video explains what that world is, why the hero leaves, and what happens when they try to return. The truth the hero discovers when they venture outside those walls is the same one you do. That's because there's only one story. Thinking for yourself means having original thoughts, or "virgin birth." When we get our truth from a source outside ourselves it means we are an echo and a citizen of the Ordinary World.
Story Law - What's in a Name? - Part IV
Writers know character names are very important. Parents should too. Names mold us. The Marvel hero Vision is an excellent example of this. (As are all superhero names.) His name perfectly expresses his character -- and his destiny. This is true in story, because it's true in us. This is why people legally change their names when they want to change their lives. Heroes receive name changes (and costume changes) to show how they have evolved. Remember, there is no outer journey. All location and camera changes are just physical representations of the character's inner growth. There's only one story. There's only one person in that story. And that person is you.
Story Law - Hero's Journey is Sexist - Part III
Beware anyone preaching an "Us-vs-Them" or victimhood mentality. That is the thinking of the Ordinary World and the very thing heroes must leave behind if they wish to ascend back to Paradise.
Story Law - Rebellion - Part II
Rebellion isn't the bad word we all think it is. In fact, it's impossible to become a hero unless you disobey. The Hero's Journey is one of rebellion. You can see this through all human history and world religions. The opposite of courage isn't cowardice, but conformity. There is only one story. There is only one rebel in that story. And that rebel is you.
Story Law - Shift Happens - Part I
There are no solids, not in nature, and not in you. Everything is in a state of flux. You are not your past or beliefs. You are not a victim. You are not a noun, but a verb. Like the heroes in every story, you are in a state of becoming. There is only one story. There is only one person in that story. And that person is you. But where does that story come from? The same place all science, theology, philosophy, psychology and the arts come from... the solar cycle.
